Band History
The origins of D’Art Band go back to the early 1980’s when vocalist Jane, guitarist Waldon, bassist/guitarist Pete, keyboardist Craig and drummer Jerry began to play rock and pop tunes together at various high school dances, clubs, and weddings. Their music took them all across the lower region of Michigan from Port Huron to Holland to Mount Pleasant to Cold Water at gatherings from small private parties to a large 5000 person concert at the Michigan Special Olympics.
The group was inactive for an extended time, but reformed in 2003 to explore the creative music energy that remained a common bond between them. This time, however, they were also graced with the wonderful addition of Celeste on flute. Their repertoire was now focused on original music written by primary songwriters Jane, Craig, Waldon and Pete. Performances have included many social events and fund raisers including concerts at New Morning School, Covenant Church, St. John Neumann Church, the Hope For Haiti Benefit Concert at New Life Church, as well as part of some shows at Simon’s in Allen Park and the Token Lounge in Westland. Recently they added several epic Rock tunes to their set for a very special performance at the Plymouth Community Arts Council.
Bios
Jane Renwick Fry – Jane has always loved to sing. She has fond memories of singing in the car with her parents while on family vacations. Harmonizing was always part of the fun. Growing up, she had tons of old 45′s to sing along with. She sang in choir throughout junior and senior high school. Writing “jingles” for an advertising class in high school got her interested in songwriting, and she now really enjoys collaborating with her fellow band mates. Jane’s singing has been featured on two of Waldon’s solo CD’s. (Check them out on Waldon’s web page).
Craig Fry – Craig was probably about 6 or 7 when he got his first guitar. His parents decided early on that all of their kids should take piano lessons, so Craig started piano at age 8. His parents forced him to practice an hour a day, and if he missed a day he had to make it up on the weekend. He soon realized that since Mom didn’t know what he was supposed to be practicing, he could start picking out songs he liked by ear. (The first was “Baby Elephant Walk” by Henry Mancini). After a while, he was playing for fun more than just putting in the required time. His parents were happy and he was happy.
Waldon Reed, Jr.– Waldon has been a freelance guitarist, instructor, and composer in the Detroit area since 1982. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in guitar performance from Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan (1989) and his Master of Music degree in composition from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan (1992). His playing styles include classical, jazz, and rock; all of which are reflected in his eclectic compositional style. As a student he has received numerous awards for both composing and performing. Of the most notable award is the Music Teachers National Association Student Composition Contest (1989), where he won first place nationally for his composition Duo Fantasy for flute and guitar. His composition, Blues Emporium, was selected for the early mp3.com’s 103 Of The Best Songs You’ve Never Heard Vol.2 compilation CD. His popularity on the internet has led to CD sales on every continent. Presently, Waldon divides his time between recording his latest compositions and a thriving free lance teaching schedule which includes an adjunct faculty position at Marygrove College (Detroit).
Celeste Reed – Classically trained, Celeste is a great addition to the D’Art Band sound. She also teaches music nearby at the middle school level.
Pete Celano – Pete’s earliest musical memories are of an aunt playing guitar for him. When he was a bit older and struggling to teach himself to play guitar, his folks arranged lessons for him with a cousin who was an accomplished classical guitarist. He played and listened to classical music until 5th or 6th grade, when he discovered The Beatles. He mucked around in a variety of amateur and semi-professional ensembles until being invited to join the yet un-named D’Art Band. He has been with us pretty much ever since as our bassist, though he still occasionally picks up a guitar and does some song writing.
Jerry Teevens – Jerry studied drums for two years with Ken Everts at the Drum Shop in Dearborn Heights. Initially inspired to play drums by being a fan of Ringo Starr, he later became a big fan of progressive rock drummers and fusion jazz players. By day he is an engineer at Ford Motor Company.
